Clive Thompson on How More Info Leads to Less Knowledge: We need to fashion information tools that are designed to combat
agnotological rot. Like Wikipedia: It encourages users to build real knowledge through consensus, and the result manages to
(mostly) satisfy even people who hate each other's guts. Because the most important thing these days might just be knowing
what we know.

A hot new book doesn't have to come with a high price tag for Dallas residents who are looking to save cash in this tough
economy. The Dallas Public Library has launched a new program called the StreetSmart Express that lets people check out
popular books and DVDs for $5 each. Other items can still be checked out by Dallas residents at no cost.

Chip Kidd Kidd is currently associate art director at Knopf, an imprint of Random House. He is known for the book covers he
has designed. There is a great video of a talk he gave at Google. The first ten minutes is about his new book that he wrote
but the final fifty minutes is about books covers he has designed. He show slides of the different covers and talks about
the thought process to create them. He also shows several slides of covers that never made it to production. This is
interesting because you get to see what the cover to "The Road" might have been if Cormac McCarthy had liked the first
proposal. Video here.

I just received an appeal from Paul LeClerc, President of the New York Public Library. Attached was a video clip below
showing how the Library once helped President Barack Obama find a job and "how our Library is continuing to help thousands
of New Yorkers find new jobs in this tough economy".

Open Solutions for Libraries Gain Momentum Open sharing of data has often collided with issues of ownership and licensing.
Nobody does more of a balancing act than librarians, who work to provide materials freely to patrons and other libraries
while protecting owners rights. LibLime (www.liblime.com), an upstart company that has provided open source software
solutions for libraries for several years (best known for its Koha ILS), has made its move to the next frontier of
opennessproviding open data and open library content.

--What Is A Link From LISNews Worth? Hint: A Lot

Allow me to brag for a moment. I was doing some work on the LISHost stats last night and noticed I could see if LISNews has
any impact on the biblioblogosphere. You're probably familiar with our "Blogs To Read In..." list we've done for the past
few years, it's usually one of the most read stories of the year. I've always been really curious if being on this list in
particular makes any difference to a site, mostly because the list takes so long to put together. I'm generally curious if
on any given day a link from LISNews brings in any significant number of readers in general, but this post in particular
seems like it should mean something. So I won't name the site, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw when I took a
look at the stats, a big jump in readership. Here's what I saw on one of the charts: As you can see there was about a
40%-50% jump in sessions after the list was posted to LISNews. The numbers show an increase of about 300-400 sessions a day,
and that has been sustained for several weeks now. I have no reason to believe this site is representative of all the
other sites, but at least I can see someone agreed with at least one of our picks. All the other numbers (hits, pageviews,
bandwidth) showed similar jumps, so the site has gained significant readership from being on LISNews.
--Thinking about people as reference sources

An anecdote, and thinking about people as reference sources: "But it also got me thinking about how often we do (or dont)
use other people as reference sources. Oh, sure, we refer students to other offices on campus when appropriate, or we call
up other offices to find out, for example, whether the dorm beds are regular-twin-sized or XL-twin-sized. But how often do
we call someone up or stick our head into someones office and say, hey, do you happen to remember what the capital of
Zimbabwe is?"

--No Fines For "Sully" After Book Goes Down With The Plane
- http://lisnews.org/node/32626/

Hero pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is now every librarian's hero, too. When the US Airways pilot's plane ended up at
the bottom of the Hudson River on Jan. 15, so did a book he had checked out from the library at California State University,
Fresno, through his local library near Danville. Sullenberger contacted library officials and asked for an extension and
waiver of overdue fees because the book was in the airliner's cargo hold. Fresno State library officials said they were
struck by Sullenberger's sense of responsibility and did him one better: they're waiving all fees, even lost book fees, and
placing a template in the replacement book dedicating it to him.

The Argus Observer reports on talks that are currently underway between the city and the newly-formed Ontario Oregon Public
Library Board regarding how much, if anything, the city should charge the library for use of the facility, but county
officials have also made their voices heard on the issue. Our taxpayers stepped up to solve a problem and demonstrated a
community mindshare to financially support library services, a letter submitted to the city by Judge Dan Joyce and
commissioners Louis M. Wettstein and Jim Nakano stated. These services deserve as much funding as possible from the
voter-approved tax base.

Robert Darnton, head of the Harvard library system, writes in a lengthy article in the February 12th issue of the New York
Review of Books: "Google will enjoy what can only be called a monopoly--a monopoly of a new kind, not of railroads or steel
but of access to information. Google has no serious competitors. Google alone has the wealth to digitize on a massive scale.
And having settled with the authors and publishers, it can exploit its financial power from within a protective legal
barrier; for the class action suit covers the entire class of authors and publishers." He also discusses the economics of
professional journals and how the system has changed over the past hundred years. A portion of his commentary: "The
result stands out on the acquisitions budget of every research library: the Journal of Comparative Neurology now costs
$25,910 for a year's subscription; Tetrahedron costs $17,969 (or $39,739, if bundled with related publications as a
Tetrahedron package); the average price of a chemistry journal is $3,490; and the ripple effects have damaged intellectual
life throughout the world of learning. Owing to the skyrocketing cost of serials, libraries that used to spend 50 percent of
their acquisitions budget on monographs now spend 25 percent or less. University presses, which depend on sales to
libraries, cannot cover their costs by publishing monographs. And young scholars who depend on publishing to advance their
careers are now in danger of perishing."
