--MySpace Claims to Have Booted Sex Offenders but Won't Identify them to Facebook

It's the old pay to play gambit. According to CNet, MySpace announced on Tuesday that it has deleted 90,000 accounts owned
by registered sex offenders. It's especially good news for Sentinel, the security company that MySpace used to track down
the accounts. And now Sentinel appears to be trying to take advantage of its success with MySpace into a PR campaign partly
aimed at getting Facebook into signing a contract as well. John Cardillo, the CEO of Sentinel, gave an interview to
TechCrunch in which he said thousands of those who were banned from MySpace can now be found on Facebook--not yet one of
Sentinel's clients. Not great news for Facebook. "For a company that has a mission to keep kids safe, we find it
irresponsible that they wouldn't share this with us," representative Barry Schnitt (Senior Manager, Corporate Communications
and Public Policy at Facebook) told TechCrunch in an addendum to the tech blog's original post. "Or, if not with us, how
about with law enforcement? This could have been an announcement that Sentinel and Facebook removed 8,000 potential sex
offenders. We still don't have the information on who they are. If you are willing to share that with us, we will
investigate immediately."

An interesting story out of Middle EarthNew Zealand relates to the Aotearoa People's Network. The Aotearoa People's
Network is the backbone providing Internet access at libraries in New Zealand. The Marlborough Express reports that a local
Internet cafe owner wanted Internet access at local libraries limited to New Zealanders only due to an adverse impact on
their cafe's business. The local council had a committee rule against the request on the grounds that limiting Internet
access at libraries according to nationality might violate the country's Human Rights Act.

The Oscar Wilde Bookstore in Greenwich Village which is believed to be the oldest GLBT bookstore in the country will close
on March 29th. Unfortunately we do not have the resources to weather the current economic crisis and find it’s time to call
it a day. So thanks to all who have been a part of the Oscar Wilde family over the years, you have truly been a part of a
great global community. More from the Times.

Clive Thompson on How More Info Leads to Less Knowledge: We need to fashion information tools that are designed to combat
agnotological rot. Like Wikipedia: It encourages users to build real knowledge through consensus, and the result manages to
(mostly) satisfy even people who hate each other's guts. Because the most important thing these days might just be knowing
what we know.

A hot new book doesn't have to come with a high price tag for Dallas residents who are looking to save cash in this tough
economy. The Dallas Public Library has launched a new program called the StreetSmart Express that lets people check out
popular books and DVDs for $5 each. Other items can still be checked out by Dallas residents at no cost.

Chip Kidd Kidd is currently associate art director at Knopf, an imprint of Random House. He is known for the book covers he
has designed. There is a great video of a talk he gave at Google. The first ten minutes is about his new book that he wrote
but the final fifty minutes is about book covers he has designed. He show slides of the different covers and talks about the
thought process to create them. He also shows several slides of covers that never made it to production. This is interesting
because you get to see what the cover to "The Road" might have been if Cormac McCarthy had liked the first proposal. Video
here.

I just received an appeal from Paul LeClerc, President of the New York Public Library. Attached was a video clip below
showing how the Library once helped President Barack Obama find a job and "how our Library is continuing to help thousands
of New Yorkers find new jobs in this tough economy".

>From the GC to the CIO down to the storage administrator, there has been no lack of discussion on new rules for managing
data and electronic documents. Everything from regulatory compliance such as Sarbanes-Oxley to the Federal Rules of Civil
Procedure has made IT aware that they need to be ready to archive more data longer. Yet the most common refrain heard is: "I
know I need to do something, just someone tell me what I specifically have to do." How do you cut through the fog, and
develop specific technical requirements for saving, managing and deleting data in an archival system? Despite confusion,
archiving of data can actually be broken down into fundamental requirements.

Open Solutions for Libraries Gain Momentum Open sharing of data has often collided with issues of ownership and licensing.
Nobody does more of a balancing act than librarians, who work to provide materials freely to patrons and other libraries
while protecting owners’ rights. LibLime (www.liblime.com), an upstart company that has provided open source software
solutions for libraries for several years (best known for its Koha ILS), has made its move to the next frontier of
openness—providing open data and open library content.

--What Is A Link From LISNews Worth? Hint: A Lot
- http://lisnews.org/node/32630/
-Front Page Story by Blake Posted Tuesday February 3rd at 9:49 AM

Allow me to brag for a moment. I was doing some work on the LISHost stats last night and noticed I could see if LISNews has
any impact on the biblioblogosphere. You're probably familiar with our "Blogs To Read In..." list we've done for the past
few years, it's usually one of the most read stories of the year. I've always been really curious if being on this list in
particular makes any difference to a site, mostly because the list takes so long to put together. I'm generally curious if
on any given day a link from LISNews brings in any significant number of readers in general, but this post in particular
seems like it should mean something. So I won't name the site, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw when I took a
look at the stats, a big jump in readership. Here's what I saw on one of the charts: As you can see there was about a
40%-50% jump in sessions after the list was posted to LISNews. The numbers show an increase of about 300-400 sessions a day,
and that has been sustained for several weeks now. I have no reason to believe this site is representative of all the
other sites, but at least I can see someone agreed with at least one of our picks. All the other numbers (hits, pageviews,
bandwidth) showed similar jumps, so the site has gained significant readership from being on LISNews.

--Thinking about people as reference sources

An anecdote, and thinking about people as reference sources: "But it also got me thinking about how often we do (or don’t)
use other people as reference sources. Oh, sure, we refer students to other offices on campus when appropriate, or we call
up other offices to find out, for example, whether the dorm beds are regular-twin-sized or XL-twin-sized. But how often do
we call someone up or stick our head into someone’s office and say, “hey, do you happen to remember what the capital of
Zimbabwe is?”"
